Online Business Q&A
QUESTION:
Is it better to use a web-based list manager to manage my
newsletter or should I install a script on my domain to
do this?
ANSWER:
There are advantages and disadvantages to both. With
a third-party list host:
- It's not tied into your domain, so even if your domain
is down you still have access to your list.
- Monthly or annual fees are typical... plus you're often
restricted to a certain number of messages, lists, or
message size. Anything 'over the limit' costs more
money, an expense that become significant as your list
continues to grow.
- Your third-party host will handle any 'technical'
issues for you with regards to your list.
- You're at the mercy of your list host if they decide
they have to do maintenance or upgrades, or if their
site goes down. THEY have your list!
- You may experience problems having your email delivered.
Because you "share" the service with so many
others, you're lumped in together with them if someone
decides to spam. Some ISPs may block messages coming from
a third-party host if they've had repeated email abuse
from one or more of their customers (even if it's not you!).
With your own list management script:
- Your list resides on your own server, so you have access
to it whenever you like.
- On the flipside, if your domain goes down, so does your
list.
- Likewise, if you change web hosts you may have to
reinstall and/or reconfigure your script -- that can
mean added expense if you don't know how to do it
yourself.
- The cost can be significantly lower -- particularly
if you simply purchase a 'lifetime license' to use the
script. Note that not all scripts allow for multiple
lists.
I personally have a list host installed on my own
server. The one I use is ListMailPro.
A word to the wise: backup your subscriber list regularly
and often, regardless of where you host your list.
