The first thing to know is that hits is not the same
thing as unique visitors or page views. For example,
if someone comes back to view your site three times, that's
just 1 visitor. Similarly, if a visitor views two pages
on your site, that's again only 1 visitor.
Secondly, there's no real way to say how many unique
visitors you need per day in order to make a steady income.
It depends on things like the quality of your traffic, the
effectiveness of your sales copy, the value for the money,
the look of your site, your credibility, and many other
factors.
What you need to know is your conversion rate -- the
percentage of visitors you turn into paying customers.
You should be able to calculate your current CR by taking
the total number of unique visitors you get over the month,
and dividing it by the number of sales you make during
that month. For example:
- Let's say, for the sake of this example, that you get
50 unique visitors per day. That's 1500 visitors/month.
- You make 10 sales per month.
- Your CR = 10/1500 = 0.7% (7 tenths of 1 percent).
So how much do you want to make? If your goal is to make
1 sale per day, then you would have to get around 143
visitors per day.
[143 visitors * 0.7% conversion rate = 1 sale]
There are things that can be done to improve CRs -- but
to get started, do a calculation like the one above so
that you can set a goal for increasing your traffic.
SIDENOTE:
If you don't know the number of visitors you get, you'll
need a better web stats program. Here are a few to look
into:
Note also that some web hosts include a web stats program
with your hosting package.
